PRESENT STATUS OF THE PERUVIAN GEOMAGNETIC OBSERVATIONS
                                        By Oscar Veliz

1. INTRODUCTION
Seven geomagnetic stations are in operation at present, three are absolute observatories
(Huancayo, Ancon,
Arequipa) were absolute observations are currently carried out and the remain are variation stations
mainly operated for specific scientific research projects. See the station location in Fig. 1 and
the instrumental description on table 1.

2.- HUANCAYO MAGNETIC OBSERVATORY
Huancayo Observatory was established in 1922 by the Carnegie Institution of Washington, soon
the abnormally amplitude of the geomagnetic field diurnal variation observed led to intensive studi
es to explain this phenomenon, and finally it was called "Equatorial Electrojet" by Chapman (1951) a
nd others. Huancayo has had very important role because of its unique position near the magnetic equa
tor as well as the long and excellent data supplied by this observatory since the days of Carnegie. U
nfortunately its long standing of data collection was interrupted in December 1992, when absolute obs
ervations were stopped although daily records were continued only as relative variation. As the scien
tist at World wide were quite concerned because Huancayo Observatory was not reporting magnetic data
for more than three years, the IGP decided in 1996 to resume the normal geomagnetic observations at H
uancayo. Reorientation and recalibrations of the Eschenhagen variometers were made and restarting to
operate in middle 1996, also absolute observations were resumed using modern absolute instruments.
A three component Ring core fluxgate magnetometer developed at the Tokyo University is currently in
operation as the main variometer system. The sampling rate used is 10 seconds. Absolute 1 minute X, Y,
Z mean values are derived from 10 sec. data using baseline values computed from absolute observation
s. The data acquisition system is composed by an 12 bits ADC board connected to an IBM compatible PC.
Permanent Internet connection is available at the Observatory site since December 1997. FTP server h
as been installed to provide service for magnetic data base access from outside.
Another new magnetometer system which is part of a project called "Ocean Hemisphere bottom
magnetometer" has been in operation continuously since July 1997. The aim of the project is to obtai
n data needed for the analysis of deep structure of the Earth. Although the original plan did not i
nclude the continent it was decided to put one of the magnetometers in Peru, since there are few obse
rvatories reporting data from South America. One second X,Y,Z data and one minute F data are recorde
d on a ZIP disk which are changed once a month and sent to the Earthquake Research Institute of the U
niversity of Tokyo, Japan.

3. ANCON GEOMAGNETIC OBSERVATORY
The fluxgate magnetometer made at the Geophysics Research Laboratory (GRL) of The Univers
ity of Tokyo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, Japan (1984), is employed currently to conduct continuous geomagneti
c field (H, D, Z) measurements. 10 seconds sampling rate data are available for Ancon station since S
eptember 1991 up to now and can be obtained in PC compatible diskettes in a ASCII format. Digital dat
a obtained with the automatic fluxgate recording system are edited, filtered and processed to create
ASCII user portable files for subsequent final processing to obtain absolute data, minute means, hour
ly means. Reduced and standard 20 mm/hr. simulated magnetograms are generated for K index scaling and
 special geomagnetic phenomena monthly reports.

4.- DATA PROCESSING AND HANDLING
Minute mean values from Huancayo digital magnetometer are available since May 1997
with absolute baseline control. Final 1 minute data processing has been completed and sent to the
World Data Center for Geomagnetism C2 operated by Kyoto University.
One minute provisional data from Ancon and Huancayo are being transferred to the WDC-C2 in
Kyoto by E-mail and FTP connection since late April 1999. The plots can be seen on the WDC for Geoma
gnetism Kyoto Home page.
