With invariant magnetic latitude of -74.49 , it passes under the pol- ar cap, auroral oval, and the polar cusp on the Earth's self-rotation. Its conjugate point is located in Svalbard, Spitzbergen, where observations on solar-terrestrial phys- ical phenomena are extensively carried out on international coordination. It will also be covered by the beam intersection of two SuperDARN HF radar to be constructed at Sy- owa Station and at Kerguelen. Zhongshan is, therefore, a place of advantage to obs- erve polar cap and/or cusp region solar-terrestrial phenomena. In order to get a comprehensive understanding of solar-terrestrial phenomena in pol- ar cap and/or cusp region, following observations have been or will be installed A . Existing Observations * All-sky auroral TV camera (Panchromatic) (1995) * Geomagnetic meridianly scanning photometer( 427.8nm, 557.7nm, 630,0nm, scanning rate: 1 time/ 2sec.) (1995) * DPS-4 digital ionosonde (Doppler shift and ionospheric drift measurements enabled) (1995) * Riometer (30MHz, 50MHz) (1989, 1995) * Fluxgate magnetometer (1989) * Induction magnetometer (1989) * Wide-band VLF receiving (1989, 1996) B. Planning Observations * Imaging riometer (38.7MHz, 8 by 8 antenna array) (1996/1997) * Monochromatic all-sky auroral TV camera (427.8nm, 557.7nm, 630.0nm) (1997/1998) * HF coherent radar (1998/1999) Observations at Zhongshan are carried out by Chinese efforts and on internationa l collaboration. This year two Japanese scientists, Dr. Masanori Nishino from STE Labro- tary of Nagoya University and Dr.Yasuharu Sanoh from Asahi University, and two Chinese scientists, Mr. He Longsong from Polar Research Institute of China and Mr. Hu Hongqiao, doctoral course postgraduate from Wuhan University, will join the CHINARE-13 party to go to Zhongshan. In the coming austral summer season, they will newly install an imaging riometer and a fluxgate magnetometer there. It is expected that Zhongshan will take an important role in the international ef- forts to understand the solar-terrestrial connection at polar region.
